About Us

The Cardiff Buddhist Centre is the heart of a thriving Buddhist community. We teach Buddhism and meditation in a way that’s relevant to the modern world. Everyone’s welcome.

Living Practice

We’ve been teaching meditation and Buddhism in Roath, Cardiff since 1999. At the heart of our community are members of the Triratna Buddhist Order – experienced practitioners who have made a firm commitment to the Buddhist path and lead most of our sessions. We practise together in the spirit of friendship, encouragement, and shared aspiration that we call ‘sangha’.

Our programme includes weekly sessions where you can learn to meditate and explore Buddhist teachings, as well as a full programme of weekend events and courses. If you’re new, Sunday mornings, Friday lunchtimes or a course are a great way to start.

The Triptych

The triptych in our upper shrine room was painted for the centre by an artist called Aloka. To the left are scenes of Cardiff; to the right are the Welsh hills, mountains and valleys. There are dragons below the Buddha’s seat. He has truly arrived in Cymru!

The Stupa

In 2024 we dedicated a stupa – a Buddhist ritual object – in the centre’s courtyard. Designed and built by Sagaradana and Padmasimha, made from polished stone aggregate, with the top finial cast in bronze. The ashes of two Order members are interred in the base.

The Yoga Studio

The Cardiff Yoga Studio, adjoining the Buddhist Centre and run by us, is a lively hub for yoga, bodywork and room hire.

Triratna

The Cardiff Buddhist Centre is part of the Triratna Buddhist Community, founded in London in 1967 by Sangharakshita and now a global community devoted to bringing Buddhism fully alive in the modern world. We believe the Buddha’s teachings offer a profound account of human experience and a practical guide to living more deeply – as relevant today as they have ever been. At the heart of Triratna is the Triratna Buddhist Order, with almost three thousand members worldwide.

Triratna’s history includes mistakes that caused harm. We’ve worked to understand and address them, and that work continues.

Our Ethical Commitment

We want everyone who comes into contact with the Cardiff Buddhist Centre – whether at a class, on retreat or as part of our sangha – to be safe and treated with respect. Our safeguarding is grounded in UK charity law. Most of our sessions are led by Order members, each of whom has made a personal commitment to the Buddhist precepts – an undertaking about how they intend to live.
