With the generous support of our community and the National Lottery we have now raised the £60,000 required to rebuild the outside wall of our Centre and create a newly refurbished lounge space for teaching and for community groups to use.
The work doesn’t end here, though. Fundraising activities are still happening (details below). £60k was always an estimate of what we would need to cover the main parts of the renovation. As many of you will know, building work is rarely straightforward, and costs are always likely to rise. While we have built in some contingency, once the wall comes down we may find there is extra work to be done, particularly on the roof.
Next Steps
We aren’t setting any new targets for now but we ask that if you have pledged to give money that you still do and continue to support our fundraising efforts. In June, once the wall has been demolished, we will know better what we are working with, and will be in contact with regular updates.
Any surplus we raise beyond the cost of the rebuild will be spent on further renovating the Centre, including improving disabled access and upgrading the heating system.
All our regular events will continue as usual during the building work. It will be great to see as many of you at the Centre as possible!
Fundraising Events
– Help us raise money and have fun at the same time, with the return of the much loved Cardiff Buddhist Centre skills auction!
On the evening of Friday 20th June we’ll be having the auction, where community members offer their skills, and more, to the highest bidder. The event has been a big success in the past, with everything from portrait painting to a trip to France being offered for auction.
– A member of the CBC’s wider community, Charles Allen, has kindly said he’ll compete in the Porthcawl 10km on 6th July to raise money for the Centre’s renovation work. You can find out details and sponsor him here.
One great example of fundraising was a dinner organised by Padmabodhini’s study group recently. She says…
“On a sunny Saturday afternoon, Catherine and Andy Gorno kindly hosted and cooked a delicious lunch at their house for the Foundation Study group, to raise money for the Centre building project. It was a wonderful afternoon of great company and delicious food. We all enjoyed a relaxing time together as a part of the Cardiff sangha and making a contribution. Donations from the group raised £250!! Many thanks to everyone, especially Catherine and Andy for their generous hospitality.”
